![]() ![]() Thanks for looking folks, hope you enjoyed it. Especially when it comes to thoughts about the new helve I'll carve. I'm must say that I am more that a little disappointed with the fairly large alignment problem, but carving a new helve will fix that problem, and other than that it is a wonderful tool.Īs always any thoughts, ideas, and suggestions are more than welcome. I probably won't change it too much though, since this handle seems to work very well with this head. Also, carving a new handle will allow me to customize it for my preferences. Hans Karlsson Adze (1 - 7 of 7 results) Price () Any price Under 25 25 to 50 50 to 100. The classic Karlsson 60mm adze head with a long (15') handle, suitable for large, heavy work such as Windsor chair seats and large bowls, works just as well on smaller bowls too - just choke up on the handle.Comes with a Karlsson leather sheath. Not something that I mind doing since carving is something I quite enjoy. The wait for this axe is not unsubstantial, so what I'm going to do is carve a new handle and rehang the head. I like learning about new tool makers, and Hans Karlsson is a Swedish blacksmith whose high quality, hand-forged carving and woodworking tools are ones I’ve been recently taken with. The problem isn't so much that the head is hung off center, or that the edge if off from the eye, it's that the handle is pretty heavily warped. The pictures I have don't quite show how bad it is, but if you look down the edge it aligns about a quarter inch to the right of the handle, not good. So, what's the problem? Well on this particular axe, it's the alignment, it's just terrible. Wether or not this it true, and I assume it is, this axe really does seem to do exactly what you want it to do, wonderful. The rest of issue #285 is filled with gems: Pete Galbert with a brilliant treatise on spokeshaves, a sweet desktop organizer design from Mike Pekovich, milk paint technique on bowls by Mark Gardner, and lots more. He and the rest of the FWW team brought everything together beautifully - and they even let me draw some pictures. ![]() ![]() I had the pleasure of working with Fine Woodworking editor Barry Dima on this one, and it was a great experience. I have no direct experience with most of their adzes, although some look good to me from the photos I’ve seen. I certainly haven’t been able to keep up with the adzes offered by an increasing number of talented blacksmiths recently. The article centers around principles, rather than specific brands or makers. What is the effect of raising or lowering the angle of the outer bevel? How does your swing and handle affect the orientation of the cutting edge to the wood? Understanding such things will help you evaluate various adzes for the work you plan to do and/or make adjustments to the one you have. I focused on the concepts, as I understand them based on my experience, that allow a hollowing adze to work sweetly along with some techniques to shape yours up accordingly. Fine Woodworking Magazine gave me a chance to write about adzes and the article is in the current issue, just out, in case you’re interested. ![]()
